Newman Corridors and Community Connectivity Plan

The City of Newman is the recipient of a Sustainable Communities Grant that will focus on two major corridors of Newman, with opportunities to improve the pedestrian environment for students and residents between the elementary, junior high and high schools, and provide multi-benefit and multi-modal connectivity between the schools corridor and other multi-modal infrastructure investments already existing in Newman.

The project and resulting products will address the following community sustainability and livability objectives:

• Engage residents, especially those who do not typically participate in City decision making and planning processes;
• Identify obstacles to multi-modal mobility, access, safety, and comfort along the “T” Street corridor and Inyo Avenue intersection;
• Identify transportation and connectivity challenges for residents and visitors, and challenges that impact business performance and development opportunities;
• Develop slow street designs that calm traffic;
• Develop designs to improve conditions for walking and bicycling along “T” Street and to promote connectivity to Inyo Avenue, and other priority locations identified;
• Identify opportunities for application of green street concepts, such as trees, stormwater planters, swales and other bioretention areas, drought-tolerant landscaping, and permeable pavement; and
• Recommend wayfinding improvements to increase awareness and visibility of Downtown to travelers entering town from Highway 33.

The City of Newman is working to make it safer, easier, and more convenient to travel through the city, particularly on “T” Street, Yolo Street, Hardin Road, Inyo Avenue, and Canal School Road. We need your help to make this project a success!

The Corridors Improvement and Community Connectivity planning project will focus on a few major corridors of Newman to improve the pedestrian environment for students and residents, particularly between schools, and to help create more multi-modal connectivity to parks and shops in Newman. Currently there are no sidewalks along the main thoroughfare between the three schools in the City’s west end. The plan will include short-and long-term improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other active transportation activities, strategies for connecting neighborhoods to existing and planned infrastructure, and ways green infrastructure components (such as stormwater capture and treatment, urban greening, and shade structures) can improve community resilience to the impacts of hot temperatures.
