Business License

All businesses conducting business within the City of Newman are required to obtain a City of Newman Business License.  The Finance Department collects the appropriate taxes and fees and issues business licenses to all businesses operating within the City of Newman.  The business license fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30.  Business licenses are separated into three categories:

Inside City Limits license is for brick and mortar businesses located within the City of Newman boundaries that customers would visit (restaurant, store, etc.).

Home Occupation license is for businesses that do work out of their homes; but customers are not allowed to visit (accounting for business, etc.).

Outside City limits license is for business who have their physical offices located in other cities or counties but come to Newman to conduct business (i.e. delivery, consulting, etc.).

The taxes and fees for each category are as follows (taxes and fees are non-refundable):

  • Inside City License – $79.00/year plus a one-time $75.00 Occupancy Inspection Fee
  • Home Occupation – $54.00/year plus a one-time $25.00 Home Occupation Fee
  • Outside City License – $79.00/year

If you are applying for a new business license between April 1 and June 30, the taxes are prorated to the following amounts:

  • Inside City License – $29.00/year plus a one-time $75.00 Occupancy Inspection Fee
  • Home Occupation – $24.00/year plus a one-time $25.00 Home Occupation Fee
  • Outside City License – $29.00/year

License renewal payments are due on the first day of July each year and expire on June 30 of the following year.

Depending on the type of business you conduct, you may be required to interact with more than one City department to acquire a business license.  For example, your business facility may require expanded City sewer or water services, zoning or building code approval, or the services you provide may require special licensing from Stanislaus County or the State of California.

Pay your Business License Renewal

When paying business license renewal use the “CHECKOUT AS GUEST” button.  Then click on “Business Licenses”. Enter your Customer Number and Last Name or Business Name and click Search Account. Once paid, we see the payment immediately and will mail you your license
